Another Literature Module: Otherness, Humanity & the Speculative Self
This module explores how speculative archetypes—monsters, fairy-tale figures, cyborgs, and superheroes—serve as mirrors for human identity, difference, and morality. Rather than using paired texts (see the previous blog post), each section anchors its inquiry around one highly engaging text suitable for grades 7–10, analyzing high-interest narrative tropes with rigorous literary analysis. Across four weeks, students investigate how society defines "the monster," how fairy tales subvert expectations, the liminal spaces where humanity and technology meet with the cyborg, and what true power requires.
